More than 50 local residents who hail from all corners of the globe came together on Wednesday 6th September at the Friends Meeting House in Boscombe for the launch of Unity International Lunch.
A project of Unity in Vision, the Unity International Lunches are a new community initiative targeted at young and old alike to share together each other’s cultural interests and enthusiasm over a culturally themed lunch and to spark the conversation of the wonders of Dorset’s community diversity.
The Mayor opened the project and wished the lunches every success. Other guests included the Mayoress, members of Dorset Race Equality Council, Ward Councillors, representatives from Rotary as well as members of our international community, enjoyed a magnificent buffet showcasing flavours from around the world.
The delicious menu included, amongst others: Lamb and Vegetable curries, Hummus, Vegetable Samosas, Foule Mesdames (a dish with broad beans) Kibbeh (a Syrian dish with spiced minced lamb), Semolina Cakes, Black Forest Gateau and not forgetting our own area Dorset Apple Cake!
Sue Burnett, Secretary of Westbourne Rotary Club, commented “it was a lovely event with amazing food. It was good to see everyone mingling and chatting, precisely what the lunches are all about – getting to know other local people aid sharing cultures through food.”
Unity in Vision, together with the expertise of The Friendly Food Club and The Training and Learning Company, are looking to local residents and people new to the area to join them at these unique and fun lunches. Opportunities for ethnic/traditional meal preparation and training can also be highlighted at the lunches for those wishing to reproduce the experience at home.
Rita El-Gazali, Chair of Unity in Vision, commented “The International lunches are a fantastic way to meet people from different cultures who live locally and we could not be happier with how our launch went today. We are very much looking forward to more lunches in the future and invite everyone to come and join us. Come to eat, relax and network while sharing your culture with others.”
Based at the Friends Meeting House in Boscombe, the Unity International Lunches will take place monthly, starting in October, and will provide a space to meet new people from all walks of life, whilst enjoying food from around the world.
