Warm, welcoming and friendly, 3 words that describe the Unity International Café perfectly, which saw more than 50 local residents come together to enjoy food from around the world on Wednesday 8th November.
A project of Unity in Vision, the Unity International Café is a new community initiative targeted at young and old alike to share together each other’s cultural interests and enthusiasm over a culturally themed lunch and to spark the conversation of the wonders of Dorset’s community diversity.
The delicious 3-course menu included, Spiced lentil soup for starters and a selection of mains including chicken curry, Ratatouille, Lancashire Hot Pot and Fatoush, a middle eastern salad. To round things off guests could select from Baklava, Victoria Sponge Cake or lychee and orange fruit salad.
Lisa Hunter, local resident and project supporter, commented “it was a lovely event with amazing food. It was good to see everyone mingling and chatting, precisely what the lunches are all about – getting to know other local people and sharing cultures through food.”
Unity in Vision, together with the expertise of The Friendly Food Club and The Training and Learning Company, are looking to local residents and people new to the area to join them at these unique and fun lunches. Opportunities for ethnic/traditional meal preparation and training can also be highlighted at the lunches for those wishing to reproduce the experience at home.
Rita El-Gazali, Chair of Unity in Vision, commented “The International lunches are a fantastic way to meet people from different cultures who live locally and we could not be happier with how our launch went today. We are very much looking forward to more lunches in the future and invite everyone to come and join us. Come to eat, relax and network while sharing your culture with others.”
Some of the earliest member s of UinV, Ella, Zora and Antoinette commented on how excited they are to see one of the first goals achieved in having a regular place/event such as this to come together to eat, relax and network while sharing your culture with others.
Based at the Friends Meeting House in Boscombe, the Unity International Lunches will take place monthly on the 2nd Wednesday, and will provide a space to meet new people from all walks of life, whilst enjoying food from around the world. The next lunch on 13th December will have a special festive theme, book early to avoid disappointment.
Unity International Lunches hosts a monthly ‘international lunch’ featuring foods from different countries with an aim of integrating ethnic groups in Boscombe.
